Abstract
Introduction. Orthodontics associated with periodontal disease can be, at the same time, a help and a hindrance, contributing to improving dental position and altering occlusal factors, but also offering obstacles to an efficient hygiene. Goals. To assess patient knowledge about periodontal health associated with orthodontic treatment. Methods. This survey consisted of responses from 100 adult patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to a questionnaire comprising 14 questions, 10 of which were about periodontal disease in relation to orthodontic treatment, interviewed at the PósOdonto Suprema Orthodontics Clinic in the city of Juiz de Fora, MG. Results. The study participants were aware of the importance of regular check-ups, the harm caused by poor hygiene and a cariogenic diet, and 53.6% of the participants totally agreed with the importance of periodontal treatment prior to wearing orthodontic braces. However, 84% do not have adequate hygiene habits that include the interproximal region and 19.1% have never carried out professional prophylaxis during orthodontic therapy, as well as 6 patients evaluating the relationship between orthodontic therapy and periodontal treatment as sometimes important. Conclusion. It can be concluded that patients need greater motivation and better access to information about interproximal hygiene, professional prophylaxis, cariogenic diet control and the importance of regular visits to the dentist, since there is a lack of attention to oral practices. It is also important to verify the relationship between the patient's perspective and the professional, addressing adherence to treatment and the need for oral self-care.
