Abstract
Objective: To determine if the tracheostomy can contribute as a facilitator of weaning from mechanical ventilation in patients with prolonged weaning. Methods: Retrospective study in which medical records of patients admitted between January 2009 and July 2012 in a ICU , requiring mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy and collected the following data were analyzed: age, gender , diagnosis of stay, duration of mechanical ventilation by endotracheal tube , duration of mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy clinical outcome . Results: When compared to the duration of mechanical ventilation for tracheal tube and tracheostomy groups by underlying disease , they did not differ , but when compared to the total number of patients and length of mechanical ventilation via tracheostomy was significantly lower compared the endotracheal tube. Conclusion: Independent of the underlying disease , whether a patient has prolonged mechanical ventilation and prolonged weaning , it may benefit from tracheostomy for faster suspension ventilator
