Objective. To verify through systematic review the benefits that the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) brings to the preterm or low birth weight newborn beneath his/her parents’ optics in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Method. It was based in the analysis of original studies published in Portuguese and English languages between 2003 and 2016, through electronic resources in the following databases: Scientific Eletronic Library On-line (SciELO) and US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (NLM/PubMed). It was considered only studies whose focus was the newborns’ parents from the NICUs. Results. With this studies, it could certainly be seen how is important to the mother and her baby their closer contact during the time the baby is in the NICU; that the KMC encourages the family ties (mother/baby), supports the breastfeeding, softens the parents’ fragility, brings security for themselves, conducts all the involved ones to a better mental health and stimulates the acquisition of a valuable amount of knowledge for the newborn‘s development. Conclusion. This review, therefore, confirms that KMC promotes a major mother’s maturity, builds affectionate bold with the family, gives the necessary knowledge to take care of the preterm or low birth weight newborn, produces more interaction between the parent-child relationship, brings emotional and physical benefits for all the involved in the process, powers the parents because it brings security, confidence and relief in a particular moment of their lives, softens the experienced tensions in a NICU and demystifies the stigmatized labels that lay people give to NICUs.

Objetivo. Verificar através de revisão sistematizada, os benefícios que o Método Mãe Canguru (MMC) traz para o prematuro ou recém-nascido de baixo peso sob a ótica dos pais na UTI Neonatal (UTIN). Método. Baseou-se na análise de estudos originais publicados nas línguas portuguesa e inglesa entre 2003 e 2016, por meio de recursos eletrônicos nas seguintes bases de dados: Scientific Eletronic Library On-line (SciELO) e US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (NLM/PubMed). Foram considerados apenas estudos cujo foco eram os familiares dos RNs das UTINs. Resultados. Com esses estudos, pode-se ver de fato o quão importante é o contato para a mãe e o bebê no tempo que o mesmo se encontra na UTI Neonatal; que o MMC promove o vínculo mãe-bebê, favorece o aleitamento materno, ameniza a fragilidade dos pais, traz segurança para os mesmos, conduz à melhoria da saúde mental de todos os envolvidos e promove a aquisição de conhecimentos valiosos para o desenvolvimento do recém-nascido. Conclusão. Essa revisão, portanto, ratifica que o MMC promove maior amadurecimento da mãe, cria laços afetivos com os familiares, fornece conhecimentos necessários aos cuidados do pré-termo ou recém-nascido de baixo peso, gera maior interação da díade mãe-filho, traz benefícios emocionais e físicos para todos os envolvidos no processo, empodera os pais por trazer segurança, confiabilidade e alívio em momento atípico de suas vidas, minimiza as tensões vividas em uma UTIN e desmistifica rótulos negativos dados por leigos a UTINs.
